Deceased: Patriarch, McIntyre Grove
Before it burned in the 2020 Castle Fire, the Patriarch Tree was 23 feet in diameter at the ground, 19 feet diameter at chest height, and 177 feet tall. Flint measured this sequoia in 1984 and tells us it was named in 1980 by a friend of a cabin owner in the area. It was broken off at the top and had a long, straight bole up to the peak, where a half-dozen huge, gnarly branches sprouted from just below the broken cap. One of many large fallen branches scattered on the ground at the base of the tree's south side measured 6 feet in diameter. It required a long, difficult hike to get up to it. but it was quite an impressive sight.
