Perhaps one of the most shocking Castle Fire victims was the Bonsai Tree in Mountain Home. The fire occurred and killed it in late 2020. We first saw the damage to it in june 2021, however when i visited it on a bright sunny day in june t appeared to be an extinguished skeleton of a former tree. We saw no hint of smoke during our visit to it in june. It was not out however, it was apparently still on fire, tho i sensed no hint of it. It continued to burn internally until over a full year after the fire and be consumed slowly. A year after the fire in late 2021 it was seen to be still burning when a limb dropped off it with active flames and let in more air to continue to consume its standing bole.
Below are 3 pics from about the same angle of it, taken before the 2020 fire, the second taken more than half a year after the fire, (june of 2021) and then the third from over a year later after when it was finally burned out. As you can see, by a half a year after the fire, it was a blackened but still 200 foot tall skeleton. However by a year after the fire, it is was further consumed to the point of becoming less than a hundred foot tall hollowed out snag. It is possible for a sequoia to burn naturally from a fire for over a year after the initial fire started.
