The above pic is the Dalton, the largest tree in the grove.
On July fourth I decided to do a hike around the edge of the Muir grove, basically to circumnavigate the grove just inside its borders. I have been wandering in the grove often enough to know most of the trees in its heart pretty well, however there are a lot of acres around the edges I had not yet specifically transited looking for tape-worthy big ones. It is not a huge grove, you can walk around it in a day, though it is a good days walk; and its pretty steep in places, but not painfully so. It was pretty rewarding in both wildlife sightings and scenic trees, and the underbrush was not so thick that I couldn't easily work my way through it in most places. The largest tree I found to measure turned out to be just under 30k. Not quite as large as the Dalton, which is the largest the grove has provided so far, but its no slouch by any measurement. Definitely worth the time invested. I am also aware that in the Flint book there is a large tree mentioned in this grove that he and Mike Law found, however soon after the first time that they saw it there was a fire that went through the grove which destroyed all the trails. The story goes that they never got back to the tree because they could not subsequently find it due to the trails being untraceable post fire. So I have for years been on the lookout for a big one that approached the size of the Dalton ever since I read that. I will have to check with Mike Law and see if this tree looks like the one he and Flint couldn’t find again.
Here are specs on the large tree that i measured this trip:
Lost Giant Base circumference: 80' 8" DBH: 18.9' Height: 272' Volume: 29,075 Cubic Feet
It was a beautiful both massive and tall specimen, just the way Flint liked to see them. I believe that he would have been favorably impressed by it.
Below are a few pics of the Lost Giant Tree.
The Dalton Tree's situation is a bit concerning, there are large hunks of dead tree bole pieces piled on its base that are too large for me to shift. Hopefully we don't have another fire in the grove until they decay away or it might suffer badly.
In this visit I also took a good variety of pics of some very typical picturesque sights commonly seen in sequoia groves. Below is a nice sampling of what you might encounter during a scenic days sojourn in the grove.
