Palace Hotel, Calaveras Grove
The Palace Hotel Tree is 26.6 feet in diameter level at the high side ground, 22.3 feet diameter at chest height, 94 feet in ground circumference, and 264 feet tall. The cavity in its base was apparently reminiscent of the parking rotunda at the San Francisco Palace Hotel constructed in 1875, the first luxury hotel built there, so this tree was named after it in the late 1870s. A dozen carriages could reputedly fit in that circle driveway.
