This last weekend I managed to get to a grove I have to date neglected, mostly because the road looked like it required a serious 4WD to get down. Recently however, the loggers have been up working along the road up to and past Lockwood, so the 5 miles to get there from Tenmile by Hume lake are not bad to traverse, even with just a wimpy two wheel drive.
I spent one afternoon walking around above the road and the next full day walking around down below the road; so I think I have pretty much canvassed the joint. It was steepish, but not to long a walk, and it was pretty thick, but i managed to find my way thru the undergrowth.
I saw the one big tree, the Lone Survivor, that is at about 3.5 miles in along the road, the first really large mature sequoia that you see, and basically the western edge of the groves map. Then the biggest concentration in the grove is at about 4.5 miles and the smaller concentration is in the next ravine east of that constitutes the eastern edge of the grove.
Up the hill above the road on its right hand side is towards the south edge of the grove, and up there I found 3 trees that I felt the need to measure, and below the road towards the north I only found one that was big enuf to impress me into spending the time. Well actually, I did measure a second one that was at the very edge of the groves reaches to the north; which I think I did just to prove I got that far... It isn't as large as the others, but it looked lonesome and gloriously, or maybe heartbreakingly burned, i suppose both; with almost the longest and deepest possible vertical burn that it could have and still remain standing. Here are the specs on the four largest trees in the grove that I have measured and the longest burn one:
A decent group for leaders in the grove considering it is not a particularly big grove, however nothing that will rival any of the largest champions around. The grove obviously had a recent burn that did some damage and there were a couple tree boles that looked like I might have wanted to measure them before they suffered their damage. There was also a quite impressive hollow chimney tree snag not far from the road on the northern, downhill side.
Below are a few pics each of the Tall Lockwood Giant and Spiketop, the two largest in the grove, both above the road to the south.
And below are some pics of the Pointer Tree and the lovely Hanging Boughs that are the next two largest i saw.
And here are a few angles on that amazing fire chewed up Longest Burn Tree that is about the furthest north of the big sequoias in the grove.
