Suwanee Grove, pictured from the overlook above the grove. The shot is taken from the knoll halfway between the Generals Hwy and the grove.
This month i decided to visit Suwanee Grove which was very badly burned in the KNP fire last year. I had to see if the damage to the grove was as bad as i had heard; i would say it was. The grove lost most of its largest monarch trees and the sequoias that were on the outskirts of the grove seem to have suffered a higher casualty rating than those in the middle. On the outlying sections there is nearly complete decimation. Down in the middle of the grove the percentage loss is less, but still very significant. It also seems that the largest trees suffered more than the groves midsize sequioas. It was not a good year for the monarchs or outliers in Suwanee.
Unfortunately i did not really find any trees sufficiently large left that i felt the need to measure them.
Below are some pics of the occasional surviving sequoia amid the general devastation.
