#65 Red Chief, Long Meadow Grove post Windy fire.
The Red Chief Tree is nearly 26 feet in diameter at the ground and 245 feet tall. It is the largest tree in Long Meadow, which is one of the most easily accessible groves. With a paved, wheelchair-accessible, mile-long trail through the densest part of it (called Trail of 100 Giants), this grove offers a relatively easy hike but one which is well populated by many unique and spectacular trees.
The largest tree in the grove, the Red Chief, was named in the late 1900s by Wendell Flint and Mike Law. It is located a bit of a hike up into the upper reaches of the western edge of the grove. After spending some time in its vicinity measuring the tree flint started to refer to it as the deer fly tree because of the concentration of pesky insects around it.
