#55 Patriarch, McIntyre Grove
The Patriarch Tree is 23 feet in diameter at the ground, 19 feet diameter at chest height, and 177 feet tall. Flint measured this sequoia in 1984 and tells us it was named in 1980 by a friend of a cabin owner in the area. It is broken off at the top and has a long, straight bole up to the peak, where a half-dozen huge, gnarly branches are still sprouting from just below the broken cap. One of many large fallen branches scattered on the ground at the base of the tree's south side measures 6 feet in diameter. It requires a long, difficult hike to get up to it but is quite an impressive sight.
