#22 Nelder, Nelder Grove
The Nelder Tree is 28.5 feet in diameter at the ground, 21 feet diameter at chest height, and 266 feet tall. It was named for "the hermit of the Fresno Forest," John Nelder, who took up residence in the grove in 1875. This is the largest tree remaining in Nelder Grove. John Nelder is said to have taken famed naturalist John Muir out to see the tree; after measuring it, Muir disappointed Nelder by telling him the nearby Grizzly Giant was larger.
